The St. Herman’s Cave located just 12 miles Southeast of Belmopan City on the scenic Hummingbird Highway is the perfect option for a combination of cave tubing and cave exploration that will leave you feeling refreshed on a hot day.
The underwater cave system is nestled inside the dense tropical forest of St. Herman’s Blue Hole National Park. The 10-minute drive will take you to the visitor’s center and parking lot where you will be required to pay a small entrance fee.
Your guide will then take you on a 10-minute hike through the jungle, to the entrance of the cave. On the trail, you will learn about various medicinal plants and other flora and fauna as well as their usage. At the entrance of the cave, you will be given a safety briefing before you descend into the mysterious underworld using a flight of stairs that were hand carved into the earth by the ancient Mayas.
At this point, your guides, as well as nature itself will require that you pull out your flashlights and headlamps to guide your way. For the next 20 minutes, you can marvel at the outstanding rock formations situated at the entrance of the cave before you plunge deeper into the darkness.
As you venture into the unknown with your tubes strapped onto your back, your guide will brief you on the geology of the cave formation, its history, and the importance of the cave in Maya History and culture. Your mile-long journey will take you beneath beautiful, crystalized stalagmites and stalactites that adorn the interior of the caves as well as past Maya artifacts such as torches, spears, and pottery, that are estimated to be thousands of years old.
The two-hour journey will end with an exhilarating ride back down towards the entrance of the cave on your inflated tubes. As the scenic display of the vine-draped, underwater cave system, and crystals zoom past you, you will be appreciative of the journey it took to get you there in the first place. At the end of your cave tubing experience, you can then unwind at the small blue hole situated on the site, which is a natural pool formed by a collapsing underground limestone cave.
