Getting from San Ignacio to the beautiful seaside village of Placencia is not only an easy feat with Uncharted Jewel Belize but can also be an adventure-packed expedition, by taking advantage of several fun-filled tours and stops along the scenic Hummingbird Highway.

The sanctuary, which is known as the only jaguar preserve in the world, is located 20 minutes outside of Hopkins Village, in Maya Center Village. The tour will take you on a 30-minute drive off a dirt road, to the entrance of the sanctuary where you can sign in at the visitor center. At the center, you can learn all about the history and ecosystem of the park.
Known as one of the largest protected areas in Belize and consisting of 128,000 acres of unspoiled rainforest that endangered jaguars thrive in, the unique reserve is also home to hundreds of other animal and bird species ranging from margays, deer, ocelots, pumas, howler monkeys, tapirs and birds of all colors and sizes. The rich ecological makeup of the nature park, paired with dozens of hiking trails, spectacular waterfalls, and hypnotizing views of the mountains and the wild, has also earned the sanctuary a reputation for being a one-of-a-kind hiking destination.
Take it down a notch with a quick stop over at the Che’il Mayan Chocolate tour, also located in Maya Center Village. This tour will take you on a visit to a local cocoa farm that is owned and operated by a local Maya family. During this tour, you will witness the traditional Maya method of the chocolate bar making from the trees to the extraction of the pods, as well as its fermentation stage. You will also witness how the beans are organically dried and prepared for the process before they are manually grounded on traditional grinding stones and converted into a rich chocolate paste.
Finish off your road trip with a stopover at the Mayan Sky Adventure Park, located 12 miles north of the Placencia junction. Known to be one of the most exciting and adventurous tours in the south, this one-of-a-kind adventure stopover will provide you with various adventure-packed options to choose from. Those range from ziplining way above the mountains, or river tubing for two hours down the South Stann Creek River, and then soaking in the natural waterfalls located on the grounds. Guests can also hop on either an ATV or horse and explore the nearby trails.
