There are three towns in Southern Belize that many visitors to the country find charming places to visit. These are Placencia, Hopkins, and Dangriga. All three are located on the Caribbean coast.
Placencia is on the southern tip of the Placencia Peninsula, making it the southernmost of the three sites. Dangriga is the northernmost of the three locations, while Hopkins is between them. All three will give you access to the vibrant Garifuna culture.
Placencia is known for its relaxed vibe as well as the manatees and saltwater crocodiles in the Placencia Lagoon, which lies between the peninsula and mainland Belize. It is close to the Garifuna community of Seine Bight.
Hopkins and Dangriga, meanwhile, are both considered centers of Garifuna culture. Hopkins is also known as the friendliest village in Belize while Dangriga is the largest of the three settlements. It is the capital of the Stann Creek District and has a local airport.
There are several ways to travel to these locations from the Belize International Airport.
Public Bus
While the cheapest option for single passengers, it’s not necessarily convenient as it can take quite a bit of time. You’ll also have to figure out the bus schedule, get there on time, and find the terminal. If the bus is crowded, then finding a place for your luggage can be a challenge.
Rental Car
It’s easy to get a rental car at any airport in Belize, and having one gives you the ultimate in flexibility if you’d like to explore the country. The downside? Aside from the expense, you’ll have to navigate Belize’s mostly two-lane roads. These can be challenging in rainy weather.
Airplane
With regional airports near both Placencia and Dangriga, it’s possible to catch a flight from one to the other. The flight is only 30 minutes long. However, you’ll still have to travel to and from the airports. Plus, this can be a more expensive option.
Shuttle Service
For the most relaxing option, Uncharted Jewel Belize offers private shuttles that make it easy to travel to Placencia, Hopkins, and Dangriga. If you are traveling with a group, this is also an inexpensive option. The shuttles are very comfortable, and your driver can give advice on spots you might like to visit.
In addition to offering shuttle services, Uncharted Jewel Belize also offers excursions that allow you to discover the wild beauty of this gorgeous tropical paradise.
