Decked out in dazzling coastline, and set in a backdrop of aqua hues, the Culture Capital of Dangriga, brimming with untainted culture, traditions, history, cuisine, and friendly locals is your one-stop destination to experience all things Garifuna.
To help you navigate around easily we have come up with the top five things to do when visiting the “Culture Capital” of Belize.
At the top of our list is a visit to The Pen Cayetano Studio Gallery located at #3 Aranda Crescent, in the center of the town. Anyone who has visited Belize before would tell you that a visit to Dangriga would not be completed without a quick stop over at Cayetano’s studio. Cayetano who is a local Punta Rock musician along with his wife Ingrid converted their family home into an art gallery and music studio to display a collection of local artworks, textiles, and music. Together the couple along with their three children also form a punta rock band.
Second on our list of things to do while in Dangriga is to book yourself a Garifuna cooking class with locals. This will provide you with an opportunity to get a first-hand experience of traditional Garifuna food, and preparation while working side by side with locals.
The Gulisi Garifuna Museum, situated in Dangriga Town, provides you with a close-up view of all things Garifuna. Named after a Garifuna woman who migrated to Belize along with her 13 children and formed the Punta Negra region, the museum tells the story of the Garifuna people’s migration from Africa to Belize through artworks, and exhibits. The Museum also features Garifuna food, clothing, medicinal plants, music, and dance.
Take it up a notch with a tour of Belize’s most famous pepper sauce factory located 8 miles, northeast of Dangriga Town. Tours are available during normal working hours and are usually done by the famous Marie Sharps herself who will walk you through the farm-to-bottle process that her famous peppers, jams, and jellies have to go through before they are ready for the shelves. At the gift shop, you can find small tokens or souvenirs for that special someone.
Tired of all the sightseeing? Then the best way to unwind is a trip to the beach in Dangriga. Take a swig of the local drink, under a palm or coconut tree and chitchat with locals. Knowing Dangriga, surely there will be a Garifuna drum or two nearby that will take the beat out of your waistline.
